What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue (fascia) along the bottom of the foot. Plantar fasciitis can be caused by poor foot mechanics. For example, for a foot that flattens too much, the fascia overstretches and swells. With a foot that flattens too little, the fascia aches from being pulled too tight. Plantar fasciitis can be irritated by wearing shoes with inadequate support, as well as obesity and injury.
Athletes, including children, who do a lot of running and jumping are often diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. Symptoms include pain on the bottom of the foot when standing, particularly in the early morning, and pain on the inside of the foot, near where the heel and arch meet Patients with these symptoms should consult a podiatric physician.
